Commercial Refrigeration
Walk-in freezer repair, including the defrost fault behind it.
Polar Express repairs business walk-in freezers across the San Antonio metro, with 24/7 emergency dispatch and same-day service on most repair calls. One flat-rate price is approved in writing before work begins for defrost controls, iced coils, frozen drains, compressors, and door heaters. TDLR license TACLA00127982C.
Most warm freezers are not dead compressors. They are defrost failures, iced coils, and frozen drains, and every one of those is cheaper if you call early.

A freezer failure moves faster and costs more than a cooler failure. Product that thaws does not come back, and the Texas food establishment rules that expect frozen food to be held at 0 F leave no room to run a box warm for a few days while you shop for parts. Most of the walk-in freezer calls we take in San Antonio are not dead compressors at all. They are defrost faults: a heater that stopped heating, a termination sensor lying to the controller, a drain line that froze solid and pushed water back under the coil. Polar Express works on every brand of freezer box and low-temperature condensing unit, day or night, at a flat rate quoted before the repair begins.
What we handle
Walk-In Freezer Repair covers more than one failure.
The complaint that gets called in is rarely the whole job. These are the things a technician is actually looking at on this equipment.
Defrost system failures
Heaters, timers, termination sensors, and the control logic that decides when a coil gets cleared. This is the single most common fault we find on a warm freezer.
Iced coils and frozen drains
Coils packed solid, drain lines frozen closed, and heat tape that stopped doing its job. We clear the ice and then fix the reason it formed.
Refrigerant leaks and low charge
A low-temperature system is far less forgiving of a small leak than a cooler is. We locate it, repair it, and charge the system to spec.
Compressors and condensing units
Failed compressors, contactors, capacitors, and head pressure controls on low-temp units, including remote and rooftop installations.
Doors, sweep heaters, and gaskets
Frozen-shut doors, failed heater wire in the frame, torn gaskets, and hinges that no longer pull the door closed against its seal.
Controls and temperature alarms
Controllers, alarm contacts, and monitoring that tells you a box is drifting while there is still time to do something about it.
Signs and causes
What you are seeing, and what usually causes it.
Read these before you call. Knowing which one matches gets the right parts on the truck, and a couple of them are worth acting on in the next ten minutes.
Frost building on the ceiling, walls, or cartons
Heavy frost inside a freezer is moisture getting in and never getting back out. A failing gasket, a door propped open on a hot delivery, or a defrost cycle that no longer terminates properly all show up as frost long before they show up on the thermometer.
The evaporator coil is a solid block of ice
An iced-over coil has stopped moving air, so the box warms even while the compressor runs hard. The real cause is upstream: a dead defrost heater, a stuck timer, a failed termination thermostat, or a drain that backed up and refroze.
It holds during the day and drifts overnight
A box that only fails on one part of the cycle is usually a defrost or control problem rather than a mechanical one, and it is the easiest fault in this trade to catch if somebody is logging temperatures. A box that only struggles during service is often a door-traffic or ambient-heat problem instead.
Ice cream is soft but the wall thermometer reads fine
Air temperature at the sensor and product temperature in the middle of a stack are two different numbers. Soft product with a good wall reading usually means poor circulation inside the box, a sensor in the wrong spot, or short cycling that never lets the load come all the way down.
The unit is suddenly much louder
A change in noise on a low-temperature system is worth a call. Failing fan bearings, a compressor working against high head pressure, and loose panel hardware all make new sounds, and two of those three get expensive when they are left alone.
What it costs
You approve the price before the work starts.
Freezer repair pricing follows the same rule as everything else we do: nothing gets charged until you have seen the number and said yes. We will not quote a low-temperature repair over the phone, because the honest answer to what is wrong with a freezer requires putting gauges on it and watching a cycle. What you will get is a diagnosis in plain language, one flat rate for the fix, and a clear explanation of what happens to the equipment if you defer it.
What moves the number
- Whether the fault is in the defrost circuit, the refrigeration circuit, or the box itself
- How much refrigerant was lost, and whether the leak is accessible or buried in the panel
- Low-temperature parts, which are not always the parts a medium-temp cooler uses
- Whether the coil has to be thawed before a technician can even see what failed
- A scheduled visit versus after-hours emergency dispatch
- The overall condition of the condensing unit, and whether the repair is worth doing at all
How the job runs
What happens between your call and a working system.
Step 1
Stabilize the product first
Before anything mechanical, we talk about what is inside. Consolidating product, keeping the door shut, and moving the highest-value items are decisions worth making in the first hour rather than the fourth.
Step 2
Thaw and inspect the coil
You cannot diagnose a coil you cannot see. When the evaporator is iced solid, clearing it is step one, and it frequently exposes the failed heater or sensor that caused the ice in the first place.
Step 3
Test the defrost cycle end to end
Initiation, heater amp draw, termination, drain flow, and fan delay. Replacing a heater without confirming the control that runs it is how a freezer comes back three weeks later with exactly the same complaint.
Step 4
Watch it hold through a full cycle
The box has to prove it, not just start. We confirm it pulls down, terminates defrost cleanly, and drains, and we leave your team with the readings to expect tomorrow morning.
